I went through a nasty break-up this week. After nearly 4 years, I parted ways with Blogger. I will always think fondly of him but my heart belongs to someone else now.
Hello lover.

i’m yours,
melissa
i am ridiculously excited you are here! my name is melissa oholendt and i'm a wedding & lifestyle photographer based in minneapolis/st. paul, minnesota.
if you are curious as to who i am, the short version is this: my great loves in life are my heart-breakingly lovely husband, my cuddly dog Gunnar, rainy days, j.crew cardigans, nicknames, the smell of freshly washed clothes and above all things God. if you want to know a little more about me, click on the email address below and send me an email with questions, email hugs or professions of your undying love (i don't judge). i would love to hear from you.
I am head-over-heels in love with my friends. They love me enough to not only encourage me in this really amazing adventure but also allow me to witness portions of their lives that few get to see. I find that I become so overwhelmed with emotion at times because I truly believe I have the most amazing friends in the world.
Take Amy & Phil for example. They were married Saturday on an unusually gorgeous Minneapolis day. Amy was so stunning; Phil was so handsome. Their vows held laughter and tears and spoke volumes into the lives of this couple who couldn’t be more perfect for each other. What a life these two have ahead of them.
Caroline Yang was their (incredible!) wedding photographer but they were gracious enough to ask me to photograph the before and after.
There is quite the story behind these shoes and they sort-of took on a life of their own at the wedding but as the pictures can testify; they were worth every penny.
Her dress was breathtaking.
Without these two, I think Amy and Phil would have gone to City Hall. (Pretty sure Amy still would have worn her Louboutins.)
Very rarely do you see a family with such kindness and laughter with each other. I just loved his entire family.
Amy’s mom and dad are the sweetest (and he was rocking a pink shirt at the Groom’s Dinner – love him!).
i’m yours,
melissa
When the movie The Notebook came out the theme of the story literally hit me like a freight train. I had never really thought about love 50 years down the road; when love isn’t about building a life together but rather the life you have built. To still have as deep a love and strong a hope after all of those years…it changed the way I view love.
I was honored when a dear friend asked if I would be willing to photograph her parent’s 50th Anniversary reception. Honored and totally excited. Not only do the Hague’s have a beautiful story (they met in Korea while he was in the military – talk about a love story) but they also love to laugh together. It was so beautiful to be able to document a a party in honor of the life they have built.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Hague for loving each other for 50+ years. You are an inspiration.

There are no words for how good this cake was – Buttercream rocks.
I mean…come one. They are the cutest.
I know it’s sort-of lame to take a picture of a picture but I could not resist. I love them, I love them, I love them. This picture is amazing.

Two hours before my first photo shoot I sat on my bed, holding my phone, and debated the consequences of calling the whole thing off.
My heart was screaming “WHAT IF YOU AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH” while my head calmly replied, “You’ll never know unless you try.” Visually, it very much felt like an episode of American Gladiators. I was wearing one of those terrible head masks holding a giant padded Q-tip trying to knock Fear (in his silver leotard) off the pedestal.
I wish I could say that was the only time I faced Fear on that platform but everytime I feel I have gotten over the biggest hurdle to date, up pops another one mid-run and I fall flat on my face.
Last month I attended a one-day seminar where Dane Sanders was the speaker. Reading his book, Fast Track Photographer, before I started my business was the single best decision I have made. Dane’s book helped me lay foundations for what I hope will become something truly special and also made me view my fledgling business in an entirely different light. One where my business is about the pictures I create, yes, but moreso where my business was centered on something that no one else could offer. Me.
Melding my passion for photography and my quirky personality should not have been difficult. It was inside me already; all I needed to do was put it (myself) out there. But what I found is that I was arriving at client sessions so concentrated on getting what constituted “good” shots that I was forgetting to be myself.
My personality, who I am as a person, was being stifled by the Fear of not being good enough.
The day of Dane’s seminar, I arrived feeling so frustrated and so highly aware of how I was sabotaging myself and my business so when he handed me a microscope and asked me to examine my business top-to-bottom, I panicked. It was if he had decided to give a 7-hour seminar on “How to Strengthen Melissa Oholendt Photography” and I was the main song and dance. But the end, I was hopeful; I was encouraged but I was also so raw it hurt.
Post-seminar, I slid Dane’s book across the table for him to sign and he put his hand over my mine and said, “We need to hear your voice, Melissa.” Before I could formulate a response, I was crying so hard I couldn’t see straight. (Oh Dane, I’m so sorry.) I don’t know how he knew but he KNEW and he was willing to call me out on this self-imposed failure that I couldn’t find words to vocalize.
I still stumble in the battle with fear. Every time I sit down to write a blog post, ol’ man Fear jumps in and whispers, “They don’t care who you are; they only care what you do.” and there I stand with that giant padded Q-tip again.
I give you a post 3 months in the making…take that fear. That’s right, I’ve downgraded you to a lowercase; you will not control me anymore.
In the spirit of my new hi-it’s-me posts, the images below are from a film roll (i love you) I took last summer in DC. That was the moment I knew that not being a photographer would truly break my heart.

i’m yours,
melissa
Two people willing to pose like their rocking a jcrew catalog. Preppy-quirky style is preferred. (Ruffles and argyle highly encouraged.)
Email me if you are interested.

Ever-Present “Lawyer Husband Made Me Do It” Fine Print:
1. Real-life couples are preferred but I am also open to “just friends”. (AKA – No kissing required.)
2. No monies will be exchanged; my time for your Next Top Model poses. And if you make me adore you – I’ll throw in a disc of images
3. While I’d love to provide you with clothes to wear, I am not independently wealthy nor do I (yet) have a sugar-daddy. You’ll have to rock in your own clothes.
My love.
Happy Anniversary.

melissa
A few months back my favorite album designer, Grace Chou, asked if I wanted to be apart of a night shoot inspired by a magazine ad for Rivini. Um. Is Jennifer Aniston way prettier than Angelina Jolie? That would be a yes.
One of the perks of being a wedding photographer is getting to camera-love-all-over gorgeous wedding gowns.
This was the real deal; make-up and all.
Amazing Grace for Grace. HA! I slay myself.
Favorite shot of the night. (And the satin? OhmygoshIloveitsomuch.)
Grace and her husband Jason are master chefs (for reals, yo) and host the most amazing impromptu dinner parties. Dinner AND a show that night.
She’s hawt.
Check out these awesome photographers: Tim Cothran, Joel Nelson and Julia Mary. They rock.
As for that Rivini ad? Look at Tim’s version. UH-mazing.

i’m yours,
melissa
As he got down on one knee in the middle of Courtney’s favorite spot in the city she knew two things; a) she was deeply and madly in love with this man and b) she would follow him to the dark side of the moon and back. When Matt put the ring on her finger he knew that this gorgeous woman he loved more than anything would stand by him forever. I’m pretty sure they call that love head-over-heels.
Courtney & Matt, I am thisclose to creating a fan page on Facebook in honor of you. I love you guys that much.
And please applaud the fact that I managed to avoid inserting Beyonce lyrics into this post when typing “put the ring on her finger”. Trust me, I wanted to.
No but really. Just LOOK at them. The tip-toes, the way Matt soooo wants to kiss her… My job = easy.
Hand placement = fantastic. Cover grandma’s eyes.
And then their dance party started. This was the moment I both died of laughter and fell in love.
So once I knew they would dance (and dance in public, mind you) it was like a moth to the proverbial flame. Flame of dance.
Right? I know. There are no words.
Courtney has the most amazing hair I have ever seen in my life.
Guthrie. Who knew yellow could be so chic?
I know as a people photographer I should usually aim for – oh, I don’t know - in focus pictures, but this one made me swoon.
i’m yours,
melissa
