beth & jeremy | wedding

September 28, 2009

I could not have been more excited for their wedding day. A sour weather forecast could not dispell my enthusiasm for September 25th; even as I checked the Hourly Forecast page and could not find a single hour without rain, I still could have jumped for joy that this day had finally arrived.  As the first wedding clients that I could call my very own, Beth & Jeremy will forever be incredibly special to me.

When we arrived that morning, Jeremy came out to greet us in his slippers and it occured to me how perfectly that scene set the tone of their day. Just as his slippers on a normal day would represent relaxation, their presence on this important day created an overtone of the unhurried easygoing nature that both Beth and Jeremy posess. Even during the most stressful part of the day, laughter dominated.

Congratulations to my wonderful new friends. I hope that those Park City mountains are giving you plenty of sunshine on your honeymoon; you deserve no less.

I was tempted to take her dress home with me. She’s lucky she was wearing it when I left.

She is so beautiful. Drop dead gorgeous is the term I heard used.

We were able to access the viewing deck at the W in downtown Minneapolis and I have to tell you – it may be my new favorite spot in the city to photograph a couple. LOVE it.

lynnea & erik | lifestyle

September 23, 2009

Lynnea and Erik met at summer camp; the year was 1999. She batted those stunning eyelashes of hers and that was it – they fell in love and spent a whirlwind summer by the lake filled with late night conversations about music, literature and their hopeful futures. But, when then the air turned a bit crisper and the leaves started changing their colors, the Minnesota autumn quickly closed the book on their relationship. Years later – post-college and a few years into real life – Erik would email Lynnea and as it turned out neither had forgotten about that summer. They were suddenly teenagers again, transported back to their summer spent by Silver Lake, still head-over-heels in love with each other. It didn’t shock anyone when they married just over a year ago in a beautiful Costa Rican wedding with hand-written vows and seersucker suits on the beach of a very different body of water than the one where they first met.

When Lynnea suggested that they go back to the place where their love began, I could not have loved the idea more. The summer camp that held so many memories has since been turned into a park but to be a part of Lynnea and Erik visit to this special place for the first time since they left it 10 years ago was, in a word, amazing.  I am beginning to think there is something magical about that location because before they had even finished telling me their story I was enamored.

Starting with my favorite (because I feel like that is the very best place to start)…

This one warrants an explanation. There was a lady. With a bird. At the lake. Yep. (Admittedly, it was a little strange but it garnered quite a few hilarious pictures. Especially when the bird tried to perch on Erik’s neck. Just sayin.)

This was an… experiment but it ended up being one of my favorites.

They were dancing and Erik was singing and I may have been busy wiping away tears. They are so beautiful, inside and out.

rakowski family | lifestyle

September 22, 2009

I have been so incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to meet the people who have come into my life these past few months. I met Kris back in April and after a short conversation about photography (one of his photos has been in People y’all!) he gave me one of the best pieces of advice I have received to date: “Just shoot as much as you can.” It’s short and simple but it was utterly groundbreaking for me at that time.

So when Kris emailed me and asked if I would be willing to take family photos I jumped (literally) at the chance because after all, I owed him one five.

RIGHT? I know. Kris told me he was very energetic and I will be honest and say I had mentally prepared for the worst but Kole was so sweet and made me laugh out-loud with every, “CHEESEEEEEEE”.

I wish you guys could hear his shrieks of joy – there are very few sweeter things in life than a child’s uninhibited laughter.

I had to save this one for last because I so LOVE how his little arm is flailing out to the right side trying to get to his mom and dad.

fan

September 16, 2009

Um. YEAH. You know that fan page I created three days ago? What happened to that you ask? Oh, I forgot about it. Melissa Oholendt has now become example 1-10 of what not to do in marketing your business.

I’ll be honest, I feel a little awkward asking my friends to be my fan. And yes, I’m still cringing at the word FAN. (Fan, fan, fan, faaaaaaaaaaan. I need to get over it.) I would much rather be friends with someone than have a fan but the fact of the matter is that having fanatics seems to inspire more fanatics who then go out and create more fanatics. It’s this wonderful thing they call word-of-mouth advertising and for photographers that is the air we breathe. Selfishly, I love it when my clients put their sessions on Facebook because it makes me happy and proud that my clients love their images enough to allow the world – via Facebook – to see what we have created together. (And I’m a comment whore.) Facebook has become an animal of it’s own when it comes to marketing and I would be naive and frankly dumb-and-lame to not use it to my full advantage.

A very (very) wise woman once asked me, “How can you expect your friends to pimp you out when you won’t even pimp yourself out?” WhatEVER wise woman; fine, I concede. You are right. (As usual.) I am working on it. I am working on being my biggest and loudest fan. I even fan’d myself. Is that wrong?

So, Internet? I rock and you should hire me because guess what? You’re gonna love me.

(PS – to the 29 people who have joined the fan club without any prompting…I am so humbled. I could kiss every single one of you right now.)

hi-it’s-me: facebook

September 13, 2009

A couple months ago someone asked me when I was going to create a Facebook Fan Page for myself. I laughed and blushed and said, “never”. I didn’t see the point and it felt a little gauche to create my own fan page.

Well…consider this my plate of crow; I am eating my words. (This girl did a little research and was enlightened on the marketing benefits associated with a fan page.)

Pretty please become a fan
. I’ll love you forever. (And be my friend too!)

ariana | high school senior

September 9, 2009

Who labored on Labor Day? This girl. But it was so worth it.

Meet Ariana. A gorgeous East View High School senior who aspires to be a Broadcast Journalist. I adore her. She is, quite possibly, the sweetest high school senior on the planet and if that didn’t already make her lovely in my eyes, she also has killer instincts when it comes to posing. (I mean seriously. I think I asked her to turn her head once…she was a natural.)

peanut butter & jelly

September 1, 2009

I can’t cook. There – I said it.

I really can’t. I’m not being modest; I legitimately cannot cook. Under supervision, I can chop and slice and dice with the best mediocre of them (and I make a mean pot of rice in the rice cooker) but on my own it invariably turns into a disaster. I think at this point, with so many unsuccessful attempts under my apron, I have developed a very acute mental block against the very idea of cooking and it’s disappointing because both my mom and my mother-in-law are wonderful cooks capable of whipping up a meal like it’s nobody’s business.

Me? HA, yeah right. My specialties are peanut butter & jelly and Rice-A-Roni. (I eat a lot of rice, ok?)

I think that is part of why the show Top Chef intrigues me so much. It’s all so beautiful and watching them throw together a meal with 3 ingredients only (because that is what they rolled on the craps table, naturally) for a half-second makes me believe that I can do/make the same.  And yes, I can hear my husband laughing from the other room. In case you were wondering.
